Demonblood Art Update 2 - 'Finished' but being retooled. Also updates on Wildlands Horde, and Volos Custom Minis
over 6 years ago – Fri, Oct 13, 2017 at 12:24:31 AM

Hello backers!

A few times in the comments section we said the "Demon's Blood" was finished, but a final update was never posted about it. Here's why -

Retooling Demon's Blood

All Demon's Blood art from Jason Juta has been finished and delivered. He has been great to work with and performed admirably, and has been paid in full.

However, after careful consideration, we are not completely satisfied with this pack as a whole. The balance between Tiefling characters and interesting Demons did not feel correct, and it fell short of a "must have" vibe. We did not want to essentially put out a 'Tieflings Pack'. And although it had demons as well, this is what it ultimately felt like to us.

I'd also like to mention that Jason did nothing wrong. His sketches were great, he fulfilled everything we asked for, and we moved forward with the pack as it was. After we initially had the full pack to look over, we also asked for a number of extra pieces in our first attempt to solve this divide.

We've now decided to retool the pack a second time, and are making major cuts to the plan and layout of the pack in general. We've asked Damien Mammoliti to begin sketching a new wave of art of demon tropes, including pieces that can represent or at least call upon imagery of the 7 deadly sins.

We're keeping 45 pieces from Jason's list, and recommissioning 17. Here's new sketches for 15/17 of the new pieces. The last 2 will be another Succubus, and a Demon Queen (similar to a a succubus, but armored and heroic looking.)

Some of these sketches might be changed a little. I think the Greed demon could be amazing as a fallen angel with torn, black wings and golden armor. We'll see how they end up.

Wildlands Horde

With the release of Tomb of Annihilation, we have a lot of requests for pieces that could come from the island of Chult. We're also planning to make upcoming full packs that support hardcover materials. Coincidently, a LOT of the Chult-themed creatures would have fit perfectly in the final Wildlands Horde pack.

So it seems a natural fit that Wildlands Horde will end up being Chult-centric. Perhaps in another dimension, this would have been a "jungle horde", but the jungle and the wild lands share a LOT of thematic ties. We also had ulterior reasons to need some more Rats, a Rat Swarm, and a female half-orc (sketches shown);

So here's our new list for the Wildlands Horde;

  • 2x Rats
  • 4x Pygmy Goblins, or "Batiri" - 3 smalls and 1 "boss" in a medium slot.
  • 1x Velociraptor
  • 4x Yuan Snakepeople (3 pure bloods and a  malison)
  • 1x Deinonychus
  • 4x Aarakocra
  • 1x Aldani
  • 1x Assassin Vine
  • 4x Firenewt (3 Warriors and a Warlock)
  • 1x Albino Dwarf
  • 1x Weretiger
  • 1x Wereboar
  • 1x Pterafolk
  • 1x Rat Swarm
  • 1x Kamadan
  • 1x Giant Constrictor Snake (Giant Wide Piece)
  • 1x Cyclops (Giant Tall)
  • 1x Giant Ape (Giant Tall)

A few notes:

Pygmy Goblins are basically normal goblins with ashen skin, war paint, and jungle masks.

Ironically, the Wildlands pack has a velociraptor but it was reduced to a "Small" miniature. I always felt bad about this, but now ToA has officially declared DnD Velociraptors to be TINY CREATURES. Effectively, they're lethal house cats! So we're including a second one, and a Deinonychus (a medium-sized version of a velociraptor, but it uses it's arms more regularly)

Giant Ape clearly works in the Chult theme, but also because Polymorph -> Giant Ape.

Aarakocra narrowly missed the cut for our "new races" being added to our Customs. When Volos guide came out, we added a male and female of each, but Aarakocra had already been released, and I never thought to make minis of them. It'll be great to have found a home for them, AND this is a great place for them to be anyway.

Speaking of Volos' custom race minis

Sketches of these are done, so might as well show them off as well!

I'm PRETTY sure it's been mentioned, but in case you aren't aware, ALL of these volos pieces are in the "Custom Miniatures" that were part of the stretch goals for this campaign for all appropriate tiers. So most of you are getting them already, so no need to fret there.

Also, the Custom Miniatures will ship in their own envelopes to all backers, so they WONT delay your normal FPM2 Shipments (apart from the EU mass shipment)

Dragonborn Art Update 1 - Well Underway, ~60% of work finished
over 6 years ago – Sat, Aug 12, 2017 at 01:15:51 AM

Dragonborn - Art Update #1. Art by Akeiron

Confirmed Sketches: 40 / 62

Finished Lineart: 40 / 62

Complete (with front and back): 15/62

Remember that these are not to scale. In fact the first 2 are a sketch of a Pseudodragon and a Kobold respectively, and they are both smalls. The rest are all humanoid and will be relatively the same size.

I'm VERY satisfied to see the old winged Dragonwhatevers, with their bigger statures and wings and tails, they'll make excellent enemies!

Basically 40 down and 22 to go, with 9/22 remaining being gobs and gobs of kobolds, and then we've got a slew of new drakes and dragons we'll show you next time.

Finished pieces and sketches are intermixed, so expect a variety of detail levels.

Pirates Art Update 2 - Well Underway, ~60% of pieces finished.
over 6 years ago – Thu, Aug 10, 2017 at 12:35:12 AM

Pirates - Art Update #2. Art by Yadong Wang

Confirmed Sketches: 43 / 62

Finished Lineart: 43 / 62

Complete (with front and back): 39/62

Basically all of the humanoids are finished!

There's a mix of smalls, short wides, giant wides and giant talls remaining, and the big decision has been "do we go underwater?" because without humanoid slots to do merfolk and sahuagin right, we know someday we'll want to make a full pack or half pack on this theme eventually.

Well, we've kinda split the difference. We didn't give up any humanoid spots to merfolk, but we did fill all the smalls and larges with "the classic" aquatic monsters, many of which come right from the 5E monster manual.

So our new sketch list includes some Kua-Toa, Sahuagin (though they will be short and more fishy and less humanoid), and Grindylow, giant octopus, chuul, sea serpents, water elemental, Marid, killer whale, plesiosaurus and some giant tentacles which could be used for all sorts of things (note, kraken).

The big 2x, Dragon Turtle and Kraken, are not on this list, because they make no sense as smaller miniatures, and we'll make them as Legendaries. Ideally, we can create useful tentacle pieces here in this pack, which will perfectly compliment your large kraken head in the legendaries pack.

But without further ado, here's the finalized humanoids!

Grove Horde artwork is finished, Deadlands, Printable Heroes, Legendary Games files are done. Phase 2 shipping continues.

New Elemental in the Grove Horde 31p set.

The remaining 30 pieces are sampled below.

GroveH Elemental A
GroveH Elemental A

GroveH Elemental B
GroveH Elemental B

Art files are finished for Deadlands, Deadlands Horde, Printable Heroes (all 4 sets), and the Legendary Games Sampler.

However, we've had repeated printer issues over the last month and that's delayed the final sets being printed, which in turn delays final photographs. I'll have another update when the photos come in, then the printed sets will be sent to our new warehouse for shipping, and that'll wrap up Phase 2's split shipping.

GenCon rapidly Approaching

Over the next month things will be very hectic with GenCon production. On the one hand it pushes us to get even more things printed and shipped to backers (because if they're ready for gencon, they're ready to ship!) on the other hand, it puts even more pressure on things to get done on time.

At the moment, we believe we'll make it. We still have a little over a month to print and ship all of phase 2's split shipping, and then the new 3rd party sets will have extra copies available at GenCon.

New Warehouse

Some of you may have heard, but the business has officially moved from Sacramento, CA to Haslet, TX.

The warehouse is finished relocating, and the new warehouse is all set up. For the first time, we have a public face / storefront (sort of!).

The address is 850 Blue Mound Road W Set 106, Haslet TX 76052. If you're in the area, you can visit, but some things are still being unpacked and we do not have set hours. We'll be mostly a production, assembly and shipping location, but with plenty of space for private events for the community and DnD nights, etc.

My family and personal effects have not yet moved, so that'll happen at various times in July and August, and we should be fully out of California by the end of GenCon (yes, everything must happen at once! haha)

We DO have a full time employee working at the warehouse, which means shipping will NOT be affected by the move! This is also a huge step forward for us in general, since now I'm not nearly as tied to day-to-day shipping and once I finish moving, and GenCon comes and goes, I'll be freed up to push special projects forward.

The Grove Horde

Damien has delivered another fantastic set! This time it's the Grove Horde, filled with wolves, elves, centaur, druids, and some other stuff.

Art files will be finished shortly, and should print alongside everything else. It's part of Phase 2 shipping as well, but won't really affect the final shipping times of anything.

After this, there's only 2 more horde packs in our backlog (Underground Horde, and Wildlands Horde) and Damien is already working on the Underground Horde.

New Legendaries

In the above-mentioned Underground Horde, we were slotting a few more pieces and the undead beholder came to mind (aka Death Tyrant, although there are certainly some differences in appearance, one being more of a zombie-head, and the other being more of a skeleton-head). I elected NOT to put it in the Underground Horde because this would be another great piece in the New Legendaries pack.

We're in no rush to slot it, but at the moment it's got 7 slots still unclaimed. If you have suggestions for more HUGE stuff that's more appropriate as a legendary piece, feel free to suggest away!

The current list of New Legendaries are: Balrog-type-thing, Fire Giant Dreadnaught, Rhemorhaz, Cloud Giant, Undead Lich Beholder.
